A Message from our Conservatives Concerned About the Death Penalty

Election Day is rapidly approaching, and with it, the people of Nebraska will have an opportunity to retain or repeal their state legislature’s decision to abolish the death penalty. While it is impossible to predict the referendum’s outcome, the momentum to keep Nebraska’s death penalty a thing of the past is clearly growing.
Earlier this month, a jury decided that some of the individuals known as the “Beatrice Six” should be compensated $28.1 million. They were wrongfully convicted of a 1985 rape and murder in Nebraska, and after being threatened with the death penalty, five of them initially pled guilty to avoid being executed. However, it turned out that they weren’t guilty. DNA evidence was eventually discovered, which exonerated them. Years later, a jury finally recognized the need for compensation to help redress the wrongs committed against them.

This is not the only reason that the Beatrice Six is currently making headlines. Just days ago, one of the case’s prosecutors, Randall Ritnour, came out against the death penalty. He said, “We can’t say it’s not possible to make a mistake because we did, we made a huge one.” He continued, “Our ability to execute all the ... murderers we can is not worth the death of one innocent individual at the hands of the state.”

Other individuals with intimate knowledge of the death penalty program are making their rounds in Nebraska. The Journey of Hope, which is an organization led by murder victims’ family members with the goal of sharing their death penalty experiences, is making dozens of stops across Nebraska. If you’re interested in attending, then click here to see where the Journey will be speaking.

With news of the death penalty’s failures prompting more individuals to rethink capital punishment, the Retain a Just Nebraska campaign is just heating up. They recently released campaign ads featuring the first man to be exonerated from death row because of DNA evidence, Kirk Bloodsworth. His story is compelling, and I hope you’ll share it with your Facebook friends by clicking here.

Conservatives Concerned in the FieldStacy Anderson and I spent July 1-3 in Denver, Colorado at the largest conservative conference outside of Washington D.C. – the Western Conservative Summit. Stacy and I worked the exhibitor booth, changed many people’s minds on the death penalty, and unsurprisingly found a host of conservatives who already opposed capital punishment.

Conservatives Concerned in the Media• After Oklahoma released its multi-county grand jury report regarding their lethal injection fiasco, I penned an op-ed for Voices of Liberty. I highlighted the many glaring problems revealed by the report. I was also a guest on the Lions of Liberty podcast to discuss conservatism and capital punishment.
• CCATDP’s Charles Koch Institute Communications Fellow, Caitlin Grimes, authored an article for Red Alert Politics. She outlined why many millennials oppose the death penalty and will continued to do so.

• Prior to attending the Western Conservative Summit, Stacy Anderson was a guest on the Rush to Reason radio show, and she masterfully presented the conservative case against capital punishment.
